Potty Training 101

Supplies you will need to begin:

• A crate that fits your puppy just right (use a divider if you have a crate for an adult) 
• Lots of paper towel
• Dog specific cleaning solution
• Non-Retractable Leash 
• Fitted Collar (1-2 fingers of space)

Why do we need a fitted crate?

Believe it or not, dogs are clean animals. They will not urinate or defecate in their designated sleeping area. The snug crate will prevent them from making a mess inside the crate.

How big should the crate be?

Adjust the crate so that the puppy has room to sit, lay down, and turn around comfortably. Any extra room and your pup will treat it as his personal bathroom. This method will provide your puppy a reason to learn to hold his pee and poop until you take him out.

How long can my puppy hold it in for?

Speaking from personal experience, my general rule of thumb is age in months + 3 hours. Meaning a 1 month old puppy can hold up to 4 hours and a 6 month old puppy can do 9 hours. 

What happens after I take my puppy out of the crate?

Pay attention to your puppy and look for signs. When you are sure your puppy needs to make a potty, you as a parent need to, without hesitation, take your pup outside or to your choice of designated potty area. The non-retractable leash helps with controlling where your pup should do his business.

Success! Now what?

Reward your pup with tons of love, treats, kisses or what have you! You need to help your puppy understand without a doubt that he made potty in all the right places.

How long do I have to do this for?

Do not expect to succeed right away. Why do you think we mentioned that you would need tons of paper towels? Be patient. Repetition is the key to successful dog training.

Could my puppy go potty on command?

Yes. I like to mark the behavior with a verbal cue. As soon as your puppy starts, tell him to “Go Pee or Poo” and reward them with a verbal cue of praise after the deed is done.
